On his way to the waterfalls, Bentley passed Manuel.

“You go to bathe, my lord?” the young man asked with a grin as he balanced the pitcher close to his chest. The oil lantern swung merrily from his free hand.

“Perhaps. Mostly, I’d like to speak privately with Lady Trammel.” He adjusted the strap of his pack which contained his clothing, shaving tools as well as a bar of soap and a toothbrush. “Does she remain there?”

“Yes. She say no one to disturb her.”

“The lady won’t mind my company.” At least he hoped it was true. Perhaps he’d not read the signals correctly. Flirtation wasn’t his forte.

“This is so. She look at you with heat in her eyes.” Manuel’s expression turned to one of concern. He narrowed his eyes. “You be kind to her?”

“Of course. I’m not in the habit of molesting women.” If this man was her accidental gatekeeper, so be it. He appreciated the added protection. “I have the utmost respect for your lady. She is quite… something.” A grin tugged at the corners of his mouth. “Different.”

“Yes.” Manuel nodded. Then he brightened. “You want me to save food for you and the lady for later after you… talk?” Was his grin on the cheeky side or was it a trick of the dim light?

“That would be wonderful. Thank you. I don’t know how long we’ll linger.” Bentley refused to acknowledge the damning heat creeping up the back of his neck.

“Is good.” The other man grinned. “I train with Mr. Gibbs.”

“Excellent.” They parted ways and every step that brought Bentley closer to the waterfalls and pool sent both excitement and foreboding up his spine.

The path wound through hills partially made up of the crumbling bases of old structures he ached to explore in the daylight hours. Golden illumination from his lantern bounced merrily along, sending eerie shadows careening through the lush foliage. All around him, the sounds of the jungle closed in, as did the heavy humidity, but it didn’t hold as much terror for him as it once did. Perhaps he was learning or maturing.

By the time he reached the waterfalls—there were two as Manuel had said—one at each end of an irregularly-shaped oval pool, he was certainly ready for a plunge into cool water, for his clothes stuck to him from sweat. Plant-covered rocks, whether ruins or actual parts of the mountains he couldn’t tell, formed barriers on three sides. Trees and creeping vines held the area secure and lent it a tropical feel, while the light from Cora’s lantern—resting on a small boulder—softened the area with a romantic ambience.

Yet the creature discomforts flew out of his head when he glanced about and found the lady… standing beneath the gentle but steady stream of the waterfall on the far side while completely wet and undoubtedly naked.

Oh, God. I’m not sure this is a good idea.
